Brand story

A designer who decided to build his own bikes

In 2014, designer Paul Hsu founded SLIDER in Taipei. The first bike was a step-through folding bike you could stand on and glide like a skateboard — TV stations called it the “skateboard bike” and called him a “dream fanatic”. Ten years later, the brand has sold its way from Taipei all the way to Europe.

A designer first, a bike maker second

Paul Hsu trained as a designer: he won first prize at the A+ Industrial Design Award in 2012 and a Platinum A′ Design Award in Italy in 2013. In 2014 he founded HAOTING TECHNOLOGY and launched the first SLIDER — combining the ride feel of a skateboard with the structure of a folding bike in one machine that sways from side to side without tipping over.

That bike put the newly founded brand on television again and again: CTi’s “Are You a College Student Yet?”, TVBS’s “The World Is Turning”, SET and EBC. No number of design awards compares with a bike that reporters are willing to ride on camera.

SET News footage: SLIDER PickUP cargo bike converted into a mobile food cart

One cargo bike, a hundred small business owners

In 2016, SLIDER’s PickUP Sliders cargo bike won Design of the Year. It was built to carry cargo, but entrepreneurs converted it into mobile coffee stands and mobile food carts — one wooden box on the front, and you had a shop.

In 2018, SET’s “LIVE” ran a feature: over a hundred people had become their own bosses with this bike, on a start-up cost of NT$40,000. It was the first time the brand realised a bike could change not just someone’s commute, but their livelihood.

Three clocks on the wall

Three clocks hang on the wall of the Tucheng head office: Bulgaria, Taipei and Los Angeles. The Shanghai factory was established in 2019, the European factory in Bulgaria was completed in 2022, and our own factory in Tucheng, New Taipei, opened in 2023 — the same year we won the German Red Dot Design Award.

In 2024, the brand’s tenth anniversary, the full range was complete. Then came the step nobody saw coming — SLIDER won an official Star Wars licence, and limited-edition Darth Vader and Stormtrooper electric bikes set out from Taiwan to the whole world.
